Chapter Seventeen: Suri
Damned mud and cold and slushy snow. It wasnât helping this running away business. But Suri was an expert.
Granted, heâd never had to do it in the middle of nowhere with a belly full of babies, and three enraged priests at his heels. At least he assumed theyâd followed him once they discovered that the shape under the blanket on his pallet wasnât him but a sheet wrapped around some rocks heâd gathered. And those had been a pain to carry and set up, what with not being able to bend over at all.
The trek through the night was much harder.
In a bundle over one shoulder, he carried some food, jerky and cheese, and a flask to melt snow, and it threw him more off balance than he already was. A knife heâd stolen dug into his side. Lugging that belly around was difficult enough as it was, and in the past days, it seemed to have dropped lower, putting so much pressure between his legs he had to waddle.
Tough. Nobody was taking his babies from him, and that was as far as his mind would go. Heâd fought to live since he was little, and surely a prince could raise them in riches, but he wasnât giving them to that elf. That arrogant, deceitful elf.
Why not? a small voice kept piping up, as he struggled down a slope, panting and digging his heels in not to fall, trying to orient himself by the dark shadows of hills and distant mountains, snow shining on their slopes in the moonshine. You said it yourself. You grew up poor. They could grow up in a palace. Isnât that better for them? Whatâs their future with you?
But he couldnât. He just couldnât. What was the prince going to do with them? To them? What did he want them for? Something was definitely wrong in Ellesbeth castle, and Suri wasnât sending his babies there to be harmed in any way.
A tightening in his belly made him wince and slow down, take a moment to catch his breath. That was another new thing: his belly cramping at random times. It wasnât very bad, and it went away when he moved around a little, but it was troublesome.
The temple was hidden from view when he turned around to look. A fog was descending from the hills, slithering white snakes of cloud. Legend said that Melek blessed the fog because it hid him once when the rain god was after him.
Sending a quick prayer to Melek to help him, Suri pressed on.
Heâd grown up in a valley in Zora, but had wandered a lot since then. Heâd trudged through snow and rain, had holed up in caves and tree trunks, broken into barns and houses, stolen food and clothes. He was no innocent.
But his babies were innocent. How was he going to protect them?
The king. Asha would protect their babies, wouldnât he? If he knew?
The king left you, the same little voice sniggered inside his head.
